If I remember my D. & D. mythology correctly, it sounds like she might be turning into a rakshasa (SP), from Indian mythology. Hindu. Except that it's white & black stripes, rather than orange or cream.

Well, mythology's definitely what you should be working at, but you've got the wrong continent. Try northern europe.

Though, since she's _not_ a raksasha, I will go ahead and say that they were part of what influenced me when I was designing her, and I was always very fond of that particular D&D demon. So it was a pretty good guess, anyway.
