Go to http://playground.pele.cx/cgi-bin/irv_vote.cgi -- this lets you rank the stories in order of preference. Then I can tally the votes to get an ordered list (using IRV, and stopping when we've reached the number of stories we're committed to).

By default, it'll tally the votes down to one winner, but that's not quite right for the way we're going to do it (I need to write my own tally script). For now, just get your votes in, and I'll work on tallying them later.

Maybe a separate entry for "Prudence, second weekly update"? That way you can get a better feel for those who want to double up versus those who want more variety. Or is the first Prudence update automatic and what we're actually voting for is just the second update?

If I'm reading the donation info section correctly, the voting would apply to updates 2-N, not to the primary weekly update, which is Prudence.

In terms of the tally script, I think the logic would be something along the lines of "use the IRV voting scheme until there are N left", where N is the number of additional updates for the month, after Prudence. Might be a simple modification to a constant; am grabbing the source for poking around now, will let you know.

What does "votes transfered" mean?

It means that if my first preference is for a losing candidate which is less liked than any other available candidate (or a candidate which is no longer available because it already won), but I express a second, third, etc preference (Say there are 5 candidates available but I only express a preference for three of them), then once it's determined that my first preference is for a losing candidate as described, BUT NO OTHER CANDIDATE HAS WON YET EITHER, that my vote is "transferred" to my second choice (as if I'd originally said they were my first choice).

If my second choice turns out to also be a losing candidate which is less liked than any other *remaining* available candidate, BUT NO OTHER CANDIDATE HAS WON YET EITHER, then my vite is transferred to my third choice as if *they* were my first choice!.

If my third choice turns out to also be a losing candidate which is less liked than any other remaining candidate, BUT NO OTHER CANDIDATE HAS WON YET EITHER, well... Even tho there is another round of voting, because I did not express a preference for any of the remaining candidates my vote is used up and I have no further effect on the election.

IRV, as it seems to be used here, appears to say that when an individual's slate of choices is all used up, if none of their choices is selected they have no further influence on the outcome. I could see another alternative where if someone's vote is "used up" their vote automatically becomes a permanent "None of the Above" selection -- in such a case, if "None of the Above" geta a majority another election would have to be held, and some or all of the candidates from the first election might be prohibited from sunning in a second election (as a majority of votes chose to elect no one rather than any of the candidates remaining on the ballot).

Does that make any sense?

Joseph

There is a problem with the new voting system (for the runoff). It gives an error message instead of registering the vote.

The "View Results" page (
http://playground.pele.cx/cgi-bin/irv_tally.cgi?c=irv_vote&b=apr_runoff&r=s
) is giving me this:

"For 1st place:
No ballots have been cast yet."

Now, I _know_ ballots have been cast... I cast one of 'em. So this is presumably wrong.

Hmm.

Ah. Somehow I messed up my cut&paste. The link is fixed now.

(and for the record, J&K is leading 14 to 11 for first place...)

Hmm ... is this thing still in use? It claims to be for May, and lacks several of the new stories (oops, bwt) ...

I also notice that it doesn't want to handle "I like these two (or more) equally well". Is that really all that tricky?

Actually, it's not, and I need to make it go away....
